Fighting reindeer

Reindeer are herded into a corral and then speared. Many rock carvings were coloured red in the 1970s, which is historically incorrect

Sennalandet

The Sennalandet highland plateau is known for its good reindeer pastures

About 3,000 Sami still earn a living as reindeer herders

In summer, reindeer eat grass, shrubs, herbs, and fresh shoots. In autumn, they also eat mushrooms. In winter, they dig under the snow and gnaw reindeer moss from the trees

Males have large antlers that are initially covered with a velvety coating. This coating breaks down around mating season, leaving hard, sharp antlers that they use in the battle for females. After mating, they lose their antlers. Only females have antlers during the winter months. They use them to chase away males and protect their young

Their winter coat consists of two layers – a dense undercoat of short hairs and a top layer of longer, hollow hairs that trap air to keep their bodies warm and insulated

The wooden Sennalandet Chapel of Áisaroaivi was consecrated in 1962. Before that, it stood in Kautokeino, 175 km from here

Honningsvåg

Honningsvåg is the northernmost town on mainland Norway

The southwestern part of the Barents Sea is ice-free. Fishing therefore plays an important role here

Tourism also plays a major role, as Honningsvåg is more or less the gateway to the North Cape and an important port of call for Hurtigruten ships
