Magerøya

Magerøya

Magerøya is the northernmost island of mainland Norway. It is connected to the mainland by the North Cape Tunnel, which is 6.9 km long and reaches a depth of 212 m below sea level

Magerøya is characterised by a mountainous tundra landscape

Reindeer calves are born reddish brown. They only get their grey colour after 14 days

Gjesværstappan

The fishing village of Gjesvær is already mentioned in the Heimskringla, a collection of Norwegian king sagas written down around 1230

The Gjesværstappan archipelago has been recognised as a nature reserve since 1983. Countless seabirds feel at home there

Razorbills live in large colonies

They dive an average of 25 m deep in search of food

Razorbills and puffins. Razorbills are easily recognisable by the characteristic horizontal white stripe that runs from each eye to the top of the beak

During the breeding season the puffin's beak is brightly coloured

After a lonely winter at sea, puffins seek each other's company during the breeding season

Taking off from the water is a bit difficult

Puffins prefer slopes overlooking the open sea to dig their nesting burrows or to take over rabbit warrens. Nesting burrows range in length from one to two meters

Wherever there are waterfowl, the white-tailed eagle is a must. It’s one of the largest living birds of prey

Their primary foods are fish and waterfowl

When hunting waterfowl, the relatively slow-flying eagle needs an element of surprise

Gannets also feel at home on the steep cliffs of rocky islands

They like to breed in huge colonies, although this sometimes leads to aggressive behaviour between males

Their streamlined bodies are adapted for diving into water at high speed

Islands with rocky coasts and cliffs are their preferred breeding habitat

Razorbills only come ashore to breed

Eiders are striking birds. They feed on shellfish, among other things, which they swallow whole, including the shell

Nordkapp – Nordkapphallen

Children of the Earth (1988). Seven children from around the world each created a clay design, which was then cast in bronze and placed in a semicircle, along with the Mother and Child statue. Each year, a prize is awarded to a person, organisation, or project that improves the living conditions, quality of life, rights, or health of children

Nordkapp (71° 10' 21") is by no means the northernmost point of Europe. But no place captures the atmosphere better than this 307-meter-high cliff above the Barents Sea (photo taken on 22 June 2025, at 11:44 pm)

Between this symbolic globe and the Earth's geographic North Pole lies only the Svalbard archipelago, some 855 km away
